Wedding.....

Hi there,
I am planning on getting married in 2013, hopefully in Newlands church, but am struggling to find a venue for the reception.

We are quite keen on having a "garden style" reception so possibly in a Marquee, or hire a barn but was hoping someone may have some idea's on where i could do this around the Newlands area? Either hotels that have nice gardens, or if there are any farms that have a large barn or would be happy to rent out a field for the weekend?
There are a couple of hotels i have found around the Portinscale area but was wondering if there are any other places that i may have missed.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Derwentwater Current Water Level

Hi all,

I was thinking of popping up to Keswick in the next couple of days and was wondering if there was currently a high water level.

In the past, this has restricted my plans, due to flooding in certain areas.

After viewing a very recent photo of Friar's Crag, the water level already seems quite high with more rain forecast.

Can anyone advise, what it is like at the moment?

November 2000 and my wife and I spent part of our Honeymoon in Keswick.We were impressed by the Christmas lights ect in shop windows and Main Street.As we plan to return this November will the lights etc still be there again?These lights made a very romantic atmosphere for us.

i know many people like to visit the lakes but now is the time for priority re housing to be given to local born and raised people. it is time to stop the holiday let and in particular the second home. these need to be taken over by the council and made available to families who have been born and raise in the area and the county. i am trying to get a long term let whilst we await a council property to come up in keswick but every available house is a holiday let and that is very wrong write to your MP and councillor tell them it is time to change the law and reclaim these houses for local people. also remove planning powers from the national park we need new factories and business to move into the lakes to provide real jobs for people here and get away from the low paid tourist service jobs

Convention in Keswick?

Can someone tell me when the convention is on in Keswick? Having visited the the town last year while it was on we would prefer to avoid this.

Hi, we are looking to visit this area on 13th August this year and are looking for a nice place to stay that isn't too much, maybe around £300 - £400.

I have been looking all over but am just not finding anything nice for that. Where would anyone recommend in this area, with a area of maybe 10-15 miles around being ok as well, as we do have a car.

We have a tent but I'm not that brave yet to do that for a week ha. Plus this is our first holiday away in years so want it to be nice. We will be travelling around from Haweswater to Bassenthwaite lake and lots of things in between that we find that is good for bird watching and wildlife.

shopping in Keswick

we have after many years bought a holiday cottage in Keswick which we use for holiday lets when not being used by ourselves. Although there are many small shops in keswick centre I have not been able to find general stores to kit out the house such as new bedding crockery etc. I live in scotland so it would be easy enough to bring down these things but I would like to contribute to the local economy so does anyone know of nearby out of town large supermarkets or diy stores-not niche stuff as it needs to be relatively hard wearing. thanks

Got to admit that for years I thought that Keswick was
where Alfred Wainwright lived and wrote about the Lakes....
of course it was Kendal was nt it !

However cant help thinking that he would have prefered to live
in Keswick for its supurb position in the very centre of the Lake District.... thinking about it, he must have visited the town a thousand times during his life and must have been a familiar figure at
the cafes and bookshops.... puffing on his pipe !

I see in another thread that some buses have been withdrawn. Is there an update on this as I enjoy travelling around the Lakers on public transport, and I have a bus pass.

How to get to Caldbeck??

Hi,

I'm in the process of planning a trip backpacking from Caldbeck to Windermere
In June or July.

I'm aiming to catch the Train from Bristol up to I suppose Penrith Then get a bus and end up in Caldbeck ready to start my walking trip.

I'm wondering what the most effective way of getting to Caldbeck is. From my research I can see there is a bus Service on Tuesdays from Penrith or a 'Caldbeck Rambler' service from Keswick on a saturday in the summer months..

Are there any other Bus options??

I plan on sailing my dinghy on Derwentwater. Do anyone know any good public launch sites that I could use? I am aware of the two marinas, but I am looking for public slipways or similar.

lost camera

this is a long shot but i thought i'd try. i lost my red kodak camera whilst on holiday at the lake district in 2009, it's in a black carry case with 2 memory sticks - 5 years of family holiday photos.

i think i lost it on the bus from grasmere to keswick, i either lost it on the bus or in keswick itself. The bus company haven't found it - if anyone knows it's wereabouts.

Camping (tent) accomodation

Does anyone know of any camp sites that would let a group of 18 year olds stay. Every single one i look at say no mixed groups under age of 25-28.
It's starting to drive me mental if im honest, I don't like it when people stereotype people our age, i despise the people who they are trying to stop. I'm not one of those, but i can't prove it so can't seem to find anywhere.

Anyway would really appreciate it if someone knows anywhere that will be likely to let us stay?

Bad Road Works in Keswick

We were up in the Lakes last weekend and found that Keswick is cut in half by roadworks, so to get from one side of town to the other you have to drive out of town, up or down the dual carraigeway (bypass) and then back in! To add to the misery there were traffic lights at the Booths supermarket junction which was holding up traffic coming from Borrowdale. According to a shop assistant in Blacks this work going to be running until the beginning of May. Be woarned!

Luckily we don't stay in Keswick itself, as we much prefer to be out of town. The scenery was lovely.

Hello, I am new to this site. I am in search of Walton Wood Brindle Wood bn 1887 at Beckermet.I know that Walton Wood Brindle Wood lived in Keswick in 1922. He was an Estate Agent. Hi from the USA !!
I was the assistant manager of the old Royal Oak Hotel, after 'Mr Hale' ( a tough act to follow).I emigrated to Canada in 1966 and am now in Vermont, USA.
I'd be interested to know what happened to those I worked with, especially receptionists, Louise and Mary and accountant,Ronnie Dixon.
I'd also be happy to recall those days or answer any questions, if I'm able. Since the horrible floods of this November 2009 I feel reconnected to my old home town.
