Snow photos
Hi. I'm an amateur photographer and am looking to take some winter scenery. Since a friend has just bought a cottage in Threlkeld I am hoping to spend some time up there soon. What are the chances in mid-late Jan of good winter scenes? Is there a better time? So far I have only been to the lakes in summer.

TIA
Tim

Late Jan is probably one of the better times for snow. We seem to get sporadically in Jan/Feb. There was some snow over Christmas but only for a couple of days. It's quite mild at the moment but should hopefully get a lot colder in the coming month.

Jim

No snow at the moment worth speaking of. But that is no reason not to come over to Keswick. :D

A bit late now Smile but yesterday was a good sunny day and the snow that fell on Monday sparkled on the top of Skiddaw.

It is misty and drizzling now.

There is no early warning system as such, but check the BBC Cumbria weather when it looks like it could get cold. - there is a link on this web site if you can't find it.

February is often the best/worst month for snow.

Thanks for the reply. I had hoped there was some sort of early warning perhaps to snowplough teams or mountain rescue. I'll certainly check the weather forecast, and I have found a link to the fell forecast, too. And I'll pop in here to see if anyone can offer snow predictions. Smile

Snow on the fell tops earlier today and bright sunshine. It did sleet a bit late this afternoon, which was probably snow on the fells but it is too dark to see now! Forecast for tomorrow is sun, cold & dry. May be just right for photos. Smile

Got them!
Thanks Sheila, I came over and managed to get some excellent scenic shots of Helvellyn and others. What smashing views there were! If these are not what the client wants then I'll be very pleased to make a return trip. I had not been to the Lakes before at this time of year, but I certainly will again. Big Grin
