Swan Inn
Doing a spot of Ancestry I find that my forbears the Mitchell family inhabited the Swan Inn in the 1840's and on retirement stayed in The Pount House. Has anyone any details please and do these still exist. :

Re: Swan Inn
The Swan, a 17th century coaching inn, was in Thornthwaite, just to the North West of Keswick. I say was, because about 3 years ago it was unfortunately closed as an Inn and converted into holiday apartments. There is a photo of the inn on
http://www.thelakelandfells.com/lake_dis...0a&thumb=Y The main building is still there but now known as Swan House. I've never heard of Pount House and there is not a place with that name listed in the postcode finder, but the Swan is next to Powter How, the name now given to a small hill overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake. In 1882 there was a sale of the "Powter How Estate" consisting of "the âSwanâ Inn, Thornthwaite, two cottages and about 45 acres of land with unlimited common rights" and there are other cottages in the vicinity. There was certainly an association of Thornthwaite with "Mitchell" in the 1800s - see http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.br...26/mb.ashx Hope this is useful. Re: Swan Inn
Just saw this and had to comment! The Swan used to be a good place to eat, although it did seem a little run down, like in a 1960s timewarp. I suppose it was no surprise to find it was converted into flats. I even looked into buying one but it was far too expensive for us. We used to rent a cottage in Thornthwaite, but last time in the lakes we stayed in Threlkeld. There are two pubs there so we didn't have to use the car to go to eat in the evenings.
