Rush bearing
Hi all. We are coming up to stay in Braithwaite on tuesday, probably for 10 days. Have just read a book that mentions rush bearing ceremonies taking place just after mid-summer. Do these still take place? If so are there any we may be able to go to?

Hi Mary
I believe that Rushbearing is usually associated with Saint's Days rather than midsummer - although the origins of the ceremony, spreading rushes on the floor of a church to ensure a sweet smell during services is certainly something I would associate with the heat of summer. Anyway, you have timed your visit about right. The Ambleside Rushbearing takes place on the first Saturday in July (3rd) - at St Mary's church. In the church is a mural showing the Rushbearing ceremony! Dating from the 1940's, I believe. On that same day there is a procession and service at Great Musgrave village beside the River Eden. Also coming soon is the Warcop Rushbearing - on Tues 29th June (perhaps to see on the way here?) Kelvyn Jenkinhill Cottage, Guest House Accommodation in Thornthwaite, Keswick Lake District Bookshop |

Kelvyn, thankyou very much for that information. We will be coming over the A66 to Keswick so will be able to stop off at Warcop on the way over.
Thanks again Mary |
