The Swinside is just up the road from the Farmers Arms, it too has just been done up but I think it's basically the same as ever.

I'm sure that the Royal Oak in Braithwaite will serve you with traditional pub grub.

If you venture into Keswick then Bank Tavern and Oddies both do normal pub grub though the standard isn't always great.

Or just pick a village pub

thanks but we walked out from keswick cos we stay in stamger street and it is a nice walk to the farmers across the fields - the swinside is too far out 4 us

the pubs in the center of keswick dont appeal so much cos they seem too touristy. we ended up with fish & chips from that one over the road from the police house and very good they were too :-)

will give other pubs a try next time

I have just been told by a friend that the Swan Inn at Thornthwate has closed down. Is this true, because 2 years ago we rented a cottage in Thornthwate for a week and ate every night there because it was an easy walk away. We were thinking of booking that cottage again.

James, the Swan has indeed closed, for all time. It is being converted into flats and houses right now. The Pheasant at Bassenthwaite, or the Royal Oak, Middle Ruddings or Coledale in Braithwaite are alternative places within easy reach for meals.

Four of us went to get a meal at the Farmer's Arms in Portinscale last week. It used to be a great pub, but when we saw the menu prices we went over to the Coledale at Braithwaite - we saved a good few pounds and had a great time. Pity I did not read the stuff on here before!
