what to do at new year?
I am staying in a cottage in keswick from dec 28th until jan 04th, with a group of friends. We were wondering if there was anything going on during that week - for example a race/meeting on new years day etc. In the past there has been for us... the ring of kerry cycle race, swimming new Years Day in Swanage Bay with a group of mad people and now we want to know what you get up to.... I tried the tourist information office.... who replied that I should look on the web page.....is there really nothing on? |

There are not many organised events over New Year as we have such a hectic time the rest of the year. Especially since we often have snow around over New Year. There may be some low key celebration on New Years eve in Keswick's market square, and I suspect there will be the usual winter guided walks from the Moot Hall in Keswick.
There is a general rush to climb the fells on New Year's Day, especially Helvellyn, Great Gable and Scafell. Start the year by blowing away the cobwebs! - and even better if you get the opportunity to try out that new ice axe you got for Christmas. If there is snow around about half the population of Keswick will be up on Latrigg or Skiddaw playing on sledges :D The sales in Keswick's outdoor gear shops are incredible. An awful lot of people come to Keswick just for those sales. And don't forget the excellent seasonal productions at the Theatre by the Lake. This year the main production is Sleeping Beauty - specially produced to appeal to all ages - not just the children.
