Broadband Internet
Keswick has been left behind, being the only town in the area without Broadband Internet. After the failed, and costly bid to get access by wireless, we are finally on the road to getting Broadband through the telephone system. BT has set a ridiculously high trigger of 500 which we are working to get reduced. What we need to do is to get more people to register their interest by going to http://www.broadband4keswick.co.uk and following the 'register' link, simple!!. Has anyone any ideas of what else we can do?.

With such a high number of small businesses in the area I would have expected far more to have registered. It does seem that BT are treating Keswick, Braithwaite and Threlkeld exchanges as being distinct which will make trigger levels even more difficult to reach.

Perhaps simple forms for people to fill in could be sent out to all households. Maybe in KesMail or in The Reminder? They would need to be returned somehow and then the information entered into the BT database.

I'm not convinced that many people understand the benefits of broadband

Hi,
It might be worth making BT aware of the huge number of people who visit Keswick who need to be connected as they are not at home. I frequently visit Keswick and have to queue for the small, valient and much appreciated effort that the guys in the cyber cafe above the post office make. Keswicks huge none resident population make it one of many special cases. To estimate need on the basis of resident population when an area is home to huge number of visitors who are wituout any means of connecting to the web is riduculous. Keswick and other towns with a leisure host role need to be connected more than most. I vote that the government provide funds to make it a wired town. Viv la wirless!!!

ADSL Broadband has now been installed in Keswick and some of the surrounding villages. I understand that the next to come online, Bassenthwaite village will be enabled on 7th July. Apparently BT plans to expand the coverage in the Lake District even further over the next 12 months. However, satellite is likely to be the solution for the more remote areas where distances from telephone exchanges are too long for DSL to work.
