I am trying to find a B&B in Keswick for 4 nights from 13/7 but finding it difficult. Apparently there is some sort of convention going on so places seem to want 7 nights mininum. Can someone explain? My partners email is mailto:georgeIII@bigfoot.com.

The convention is a religious event that takes place every year where lots of people come to the town to meet in a tent in one of the backstreets. They are not the sorty of peopke you normally see here and take up a lot of the boarding houses. I think it is on for 3 weeks this year. It used to ne 2 weeks but I would be happier if it stopped altogether. I dont go into the town centre while the convention is on. I have already stocked up with groceries and the freezer is full of bread.

Jackie
If you don't actually need to stay in Keswick itself then there is plenty of accommodation in the surrounding area and in the villages. These are far less affected by the Convention. Have a look on http://www.keswick.org/search.asp for accommodation, perhaps leaving the choice of town/village on 'any' and selecting 'rural' from the menu below. B convention
Jackie it is a good idea to stay clear of Keswick at the moment. I have a small bed & breakfast in a quiet street, but it is anything but quiet when the convention is on. I always try to go into town to the bank or shops while their meetings are on because apart from those times it is hell. They walk down the middle of the roads chattering away like they own the place. Next year I am going to do what some friends have done up the road and shut up shop for 2 weeks. When are the people at the Moot Hall going to realise that convention stops real holidaymakers coming to our town. It isnt as if conventioners spend money. They always want everything on the cheap. Im running myself stupid doing dinners for £7 a head.

Good for you!
B&B owner, good for you! Its time the conventioners learned that they don't own Keswick. I hate trying to drive my little car around town when convention is on. If they aren't standing in the middle of the road then they have parked their cars in stupid places. I saw one old lady moving the no parking cones on a corner last week so that she could park her car so it caused an obstruction.

Well we stayed in the B&B in Ambleside. It was a bit noisy but not too bad. We did come up to Keswick to get away from the Amblside crowds but found that Keswick was even more crowded. But that visit made us want to come back even more. I promise to try to book earlier next time.

Saddened
I am saddened to read the above comments. I am a regualr convention goer.... I am surprised at the comment 'it's not like they spend any money'.... abit of a sweeping and inaccurate statement, my bank balance is more than aware that I and many others do our bit to get the profits up and indeed the convention promotes the fact that we should support the local shops...... !!!! Indeed Keswick is extremely busy during the convention, I realise the frustations that locals have, however I love your town and will continue to go to the convention and welcome anyone who wishes to come along

Convention
I agree with Gill, I've been going to the convention for over 30yrs and visit Keswick at least 3 times a year, because of these visits my daughters are now smitten and visit the same amount of times as myself, because of the convention we have now 3 generations of family visiting regularly. I welcome everyone to come along to the convention this year...... you'll find out the meaning of life if you do!!!!
