I would probably go for Overwater Hall at Ireby. It is a hotel where really good cuisine is served in the restaurant. See http://www.overwaterhall.co.uk
You can book for dinner wthout staying there. Kelvyn Jenkinhill Cottage, Guest House Accommodation in Thornthwaite, Keswick Lake District Bookshop |

Thanks Kelvyn,
The overwater looks really nice, it does seem that most restaurants are add ons to hotels, is there anywhere that is just a restaurant on its own |

The best restaurants usually are in hotels because the business there can support top chefs. For restaurants only I would suggest Morrels on Lake Road in Keswick or Luca's, the italian restaurant opposite the pencil factory. Both have really good food, but people don't dress up much to go there. Personally I go just for the food, but you seem to want that bit extra.
Other hotel restaurants are the Lodore by the side of Derwentwater and Armathwaite Hall by Bassenthwaite Lake. I did not enjoy Armathwaite's food when I ate there last year, it was overpriced and the atmosphere was a bit too serious for me. The Lodore is good, I have eaten there a couple of times. Again it is expensive - but what puts me off there is it feels stuck up rather than eloquent. The Lodore and Armathwaite are owned by the same people. If you really want to push the boat out then consider Sharrow Bay Hotel by Ullswater. Very expensive, though. I think I'd agree that Overwater Hall is good. Great food and a formal but relaxed & friendly feeling. Not overpriced. Sue |

Holbeck Ghyll should be good, as they have 3 AA Rosettes and a Michelin Star. I have not eaten there - if I want to really push the boat and impress I would probably go to the Sharrow Bay, which also has a Michelin Star and has so much history of fine cuisine. They also don't have the same strict dress code as Holbeck Ghyll.
For something totally different you could consider L'Enclume- but this is further away, in the village of Cartmell. I really must try to get there myself. Kelvyn Jenkinhill Cottage, Guest House Accommodation in Thornthwaite, Keswick Lake District Bookshop |
