Keswick is the North Lakes' most popular holiday and day trip destination. Nestling between the Skiddaw Mountains and Derwentwater Lake, the town is situated in an idylic location in the Lake District National Park.
To cater for the needs of tourists, visitors and holidaymakers, there is a wide variety of shops, cafes, tea and coffee rooms, pubs and restaurants. For those requiring holiday accommodation in this part of the Lake District there is a wide range of hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts, hostels, self catering cottages, camp sites etc.
Attractions in the Northern Lakes are popular with both tourists and locals, and include the highly successful Theatre by the Lake, cinema, public parks, gardens, museums, swimming pool, stately homes, many different galleries and of course, the lakes and the spectacular fells.
After the floods!
In most parts of Keswick & the North Lake District there are very few signs that the December floods ever happened. However there are still a few closed footpaths and damaged bridges being repaired or replaced. To check on the current footpath closures the National Park Authority have produced an interactive map which can be accessed here. The A591 to Grasmere/Ambleside from Keswick remains closed to cars at the meoment but there is a 555 bus service covering the route - see here. The full repairs to the road should be completed by the end of May.
Travelling to Keswick by car?
While the A591 Grasmere-Keswick road is currently closed to motor vehicles, the A66 route from Penrith (J40 on M6) to Keswick remains open as usual. So if coming up from the South on the M6, come off at Junction 40 and take an enjoyable drive along Route 66!
